Words spokenThoughts and feelings behind the words
“Daisy was only trying to help, you know.” (Kara, page 72)Kara feels upset that Felix was rude to Daisy. She thinks Felix should have been more understanding because Daisy was just trying to be kind. Kara is defending Daisy and trying to make Felix realize his mistake.
“Well, I’m sorry if I offended her but you can tell your sister I don’t need her help.” (Felix, page 72)Felix feels embarrassed and defensive. He doesn’t like being helped, especially by someone younger. He tries to hide his feelings by sounding proud and distant.
“You can tell her you’re sorry yourself… Anyway, she’s my cousin, not my sister.” (Kara, page 72)Kara feels annoyed and a little angry. She wants Felix to take responsibility for his behavior and apologize directly. She also corrects him sharply to show her irritation.
“Whatever.” (Felix, page 72)Felix feels frustrated and doesn’t want to continue the argument. Saying “whatever” is his way of avoiding the conversation and hiding that he feels bad inside.
“Look, if people get their kicks from laughing at me, it’s their problem, not mine. It’s no big deal.” (Felix, page 73)Felix is hurt but pretending not to care. He tries to sound strong and unaffected, but deep down, he feels embarrassed and lonely. He hides his real feelings behind a tough attitude.
